Better SuperVision©
Better SuperVision© is a comprehensive learning process designed to equip supervisors with leadership skills that will help create a safe, productive and motivated workforce.
Better SuperVision© is a unique learning program designed and developed within our construction and maintenance industry based on:
- Supervisory competencies defined by excellence within our industry
- Needs identified by the purchasers of unionized construction services
- Capturing the input and expertise of trades people in the construction process
- Creating opportunities to continuously improve quality of work procedures
- Jobsite safety being a priority and effectively supervised action item
- Achieving goals that meet and exceed project schedules and budgets
Part 1: Classroom Modules
54 hours of classroom training in the five modules listed below. This training is now offered as six full days of training on Fridays and Saturdays over a 3 week period or it can be adapted to meet the needs of each class.
- Leadership and Supervision
- Labour Relations
- Planning to be Productive
- Productivity and Quality
- Effective Work Teams
Part 2: Safety Supervisor Skills
Candidates are required to complete a recognized supervisory safety skills training program such as "Leadership for Safety Excellence" offered by the Nova Scotia Construction Safety Association.
Part 3: On The Job Performance Check-Off
To facilitate transfer of BSV© skills to the real world, all candidates complete a three month 'on the job' performance check-off with their immediate supervisor.
Instructional Method
The classroom experience for BSV© is designed to be highly participatory by capturing the experience of the learner through many interactive exercises. Classes are small in size
(10-12 participants) representing a minimum of three trades allowing for significant involvement between participants and instructors who have in-depth industry experience and expertise in their subject areas.
Certification
Upon completion of all modules of the classroom training, participants receive a BSV© Certificate of Proficiency.
On The Job Implementation
Upon completion of a three-month 'on the job' coaching period with their immediate supervisor, participants receive an additional seal of proficiency on their BSV© Certificates.
How To Participate
This BSV© Program was designed and developed as a Joint Initiative with the Alberta Building Trades Council, Construction Labour Relations - and Alberta Association of Construction clients, by the unionized construction and maintenance industry and is administered in the Province of Nova Scotia under licence to the Nova Scotia Construction Sector Council - Institutional - Commercial - Industrial (NSCSC-ICI).
